You never know where you're going to spot a famous figure skater.
Take, for example, the group of Ottawa Senators fans who spilled into a bar across from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., after Game 1 of the Stanley Cup final last June. Apparently, they'd had a few pops, spotted a rather striking blonde sitting by herself in said watering hole, and did what a lot of guys do in said situation.
Started chatting up the pretty blonde.
They didn't have a clue who was sitting across from them. It was only when she offered up this tidbit of information — "I'm a figure skater" — that it began to dawn on a few of them that this wasn't just any skater.
She's Canadian. A former world champion. Ten times a Canadian champ.
Say hello, guys, to Shae-Lynn Bourne, who's relating this tale to me. And clearly just as amused about it now as she was that night.
Of course, once they'd figured it all out, this red-clad group of Sens fans just had to get a picture with Bourne, who happily obliged. Not exactly the scene she had in mind, we're pretty sure, when she and U.S. skating star Sasha Cohen (a huge Ducks fan) decided to go the game together (Bourne was in Anaheim on a skating tour).
Small world, as the old saying goes.
And a fun memory for all involved, no doubt.
